Healthy Soil Healthy Food – Nurturing Nature: Agroecological Practices and Strategies for Enhancing Soil Health, Seed Vitality and Resilience

This new book from the Healthy Soil Healthy Food (HSHF) Initiative, which is jointly implemented by SKI and AFSA, is based on an 8-part webinar series held between October 2023 and February 2024 that covered a range of agroecological methods to foster healthy soils and ecosystems. This series served as a platform for knowledge sharing among African and international experts, including practitioners and scientists. Sharing knowledge and developing skills related to sustainable agroecological practices is key to boosting the uptake of these by African smallholder farmers and civil society organisations while our African soils and landscapes have been severely degraded by conventional agricultural practices (such as monocropping, use of synthetic agri-inputs and intensive mechanisation), compromising long term food security.

Seed and Knowledge Initiative

The Seed and Knowledge Initiative (SKI) is a dynamic partnership of diverse southern African organisations committed to securing food sovereignty in the region.

We work with smallholder farmers to become more seed, food and nutritionally secure through farmer-led seed systems, improved crop diversity, and the revival of local knowledge systems. While we have relationships with a number of organisations and individuals all over the world, our primary stakeholders are the farmers we work with in Malawi, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
